Carers
At the Association we recognise and value the vital role played by family and unpaid carers.
While we strive to ensure those living with the disease achieve the highest quality of life possible, we are also committed to doing all we can to support the families and carers of those living with MND.
One way we seek to do this is by providing trustworthy information and support - that's why the Association has recently revamped its Caring and MND: support for you guide designed to help family or non-professional carers who support a person with MND. The guide was produced in consultation with carers and experts, including our campaigns team member Usha Boolaky, as part of her role at the Institute of Public Care, Oxford Brookes University.
The guide is aimed at anyone who supports a partner, friend or relative with MND in an unpaid capacity and provides information on accessing support; adjusting to the caring role if this is what you wish; preparing for the challenges ahead; your rights as a carer; looking after your own health and wellbeing; support for children and young people; amongst many other aspects of the caring role. It also includes useful resources to help you plan for assessments and appointments.
The support group meetings we hold in Swindon and Calne (see Support Groups) are also designed for you. They provide the opportunity to meet and chat to other carers, make new friends and talk to our Association visitors. There is always a cup of tea and a piece of cake on offer!
In our area we also have two excellent Carers Centres:-
